The Storytelling Center of the Southern Appalachians at Bryson City is sponsoring the second meeting of the Tuckaseegee Quilting Bee, to be held at the Storytelling Center, 225C Everett Street on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at 7 PM.
"Quilting has been a part of American and Appalachian history, for centuries", said Tim Hall, founder of the Storytelling Center. "Although mountain quilts were primarily made to ward off the chill on a cold winter's night, these homespun gems filled several important roles in mountain communities. Among the mountain families, many quilts were made as wedding presents for newlyweds, and, many quilts contained family histories, including names, birth, marriage, and death dates. In rural communities, quilting bees provided an outlet for socializing. The sponsorship of the quilting bee enables the Storytelling Center to continue its mission of preservation of the art and artistry of the Southern Highlands," said Hall.
