Author (and Fontana resident) Lance Holland makes the case that this area is a microcosm of the forces that have shaped southern Appalachian history: mountain farmers, loggers, railroad barons, miners, TVA, and tourism. Home to moonshiners, millionaires, and Horace Kephart, Fontana is indeed one of the most colorful corners of the Great Smokies. 238 pages; over 100 historic photographs. Our Southern Highlanders
by Horace Kephart
Horace Kephart's classic account of life among the people of the Southern Appalachians. A landmark book on the Smokies by the area's most acclaimed writer, who is buried in Bryson City Cemetery. Softcover 474 pages.
